Friday Night
Friday night dinners are a weekly highlight here at CUJS. They’re open to everyone regardless of background, observance or even religion! Come along for questionably tasting food but unquestionably great company and shabbatmosphere.
Shabbat Lunch
CUJS also offers Shabbat lunch for those students for whom Friday night dinner just wasn’t enough. Lunch is at 12.45pm every Shabbat in 3TL.
CU Cholent Society
For those who are particularly keen to have a THIRD meal, join us again at Cholent Society.
Each Saturday amid the dying hours of the day, the distinguished members of the Cholent Society convene to celebrate the celestial creation of Cholent. The noble members of the Cholent society are led in this sacred task by the Ladle Master, whose authority as the head of the society is bequeathed to him by the previous Ladle Master, with each successive Ladle Master being appointed by his predecessor; proceeding in this fashion right up to the founding of the society.
The Cholent society is known to be the oldest society in Cambridge, however the precise date of its founding is a matter of academic dispute centring on the precise formulation of the Lineage Of The Ladle Masters[1]. So the unbroken chain of Ladle Masters ran its course, uninterrupted, until the 3rd millennium, with the occurrence of the ‘pink revolution’ and the establishment of the position of ‘Ladle Mistress’ in response to certain female members of the society holding the Cholent Hostage.
In addition to being celebrated, the celestial creation of Cholent is actually consumed during these holy hours and, subject to the discretion of the Ladle Master, the bible of the Cholent Society may be opened and incanted during this time period. No formal initiation is required to gain membership to this esteemed society, it is only required that prospective members possess a healthy appreciation of Cholent and are present at the correct time[2] at the correct venue[3].
