Non-Committee Positions
The following positions do not sit on the committee, but are nonetheless very important, and we appreciate them very much. Canteen Treasurer: Abigail Bergman Hey, I'm Abigail the Canteen Treasurer. I'll be keeping the accounts for the Jerusalem Cafe this year. The JCafe provides 3 delicious meals each week; all you need to do is book online and come and eat! You can top up your credit by sending a cheque to Abigail Bergman, Gonville and Caius College via the University Mail Service. Remember to stay in credit (or I will hunt you down) and to book before 6am on Thursday (to avoid paying an additional £2.50 penalty charge for not booking). Please e-mail me with any questions or concerns. I look forward to seeing you!
Alumni Officer: Jonathan Neumann CUJS has a large alumni community and it is the role of the Alumni Officer to keep them in contact with the society and keep the society in contact with them, in addition to helping them stay in touch with each other. A challenging but rewarding role, with just the person to do it! Contact Webmaster: Dina Betser
As webmistress this term, I'm in charge of all things related to this website! If you see anything that's not working or have something you'd like to see, contact me and I'll hopefully fix it right up! Also, make sure you know about all of JSoc's upcoming events by adding the term calendar to your google calendar. Contact Orthodox Rep: Sam Fromson and Avital Berger
Hi! We're Avital and Sam and we're very excited to be your Orthodox Reps for the next three terms! Our role is to welcome everyone into the community and to provide them with anything which they feel that the regular CUJS doesn't offer. We will be organizing the orthodox prayer services, and in our term we particularly want to make the prayers more accessible so everyone feels that they can join the services, or even lead! We also plan to make more orthodox educational events, inviting speakers both from within and without Cambridge. Hopefully, in continuing D'Varsity, everyone will feel they have something to say at the Friday night table - and we really encourage anyone and everyone to write for it! We are willing to help anyone who doesn't feel confident enough to do it alone. We are here for you! So please let us know if there is anything at all that we can help you with and we will do our very best to sort it out. We hope that everyone feels comfortable and welcome enough to come and go when you choose. We always welcome new faces, but you don't need to commit to everything - you are more than welcome to just try it out when you wish, even if you don't label yourself as necessarily 'orthodox'! Looking forward to a great three terms together! Lots of love, Avital and Sam x Contact Egalitarian Officers: Miri Fenton and Aaron Burke For more info check out the JSEM page. Contact Grad Rep: Hannah Sassoon Hi I'm Hannah, your Grad rep for Lent 2010. I am here to represent the 'grown-up' face of JSoc. This is both my first and last year in Cambridge. I'm doing a PGCE to teach Geography in secondary school, and really appreciate being able to experience both the gown and town aspects of Cambridge. The first social event will be a film night joint with the International JSoc. Please be in touch with any questions or suggestions.
Contact International Rep: Kirsten Kolle Contact Security: Deborah Fisher
Hello, I'm Deborah; my job to ensure the security of the Jewish community this term involves organising security rotas - these will be set up to create minimum inconvenience to CUJS members. Feel free to contact me with any suggestions or concerns! Contact Welfare: Elizabeth Feigin
Hey people! I am Elizabeth your Welfare Officer!! I am here if you need ANY help with ANYTHING at all or just want to chat about life, or anything else for that matter! I would LOVEEE to hear from u so send me an email! I am not scary so don't be shy now! Can't wait to hear from YOU!!! Elizabeth :) xxx Contact Librarian: Daniel Isenberg Think Stefan Reif, but not the hundreds of thousands of fragments of the Genizah. Instead, I'll be using my year of office to catalogue the myriad books in the CUJS library, to hopefully make an accessible list for students and residents to utilise. Contact Refreshers Rep: Ben Goldring Hey y'all! I'm the refreshers rep, arguably one of the most powerful and highly respected positions on the JSOC committee...or not. Basically my job entails me helping out people who have not yet been or have been only a few times to feel welcome at any JSOC event. Some of the things I hope to be getting up to is a refreshers shabbat (or two!) and promoting JSOC events in an alternative way.
Contact MWOP: Gideon Shirazi Contact Poet Laureate, Director of Communications, Waterboy and Community Cohesion Officer: Leo Davidson Hi, I'm Leo. I hold several positions on the Committee, the non-classified of which being: Poet Laureate It is my duty to celebrate or commemorate in verse all momentous events or matters pertaining to the Cambridge University Jewish Society or one of its affiliates. I am bound to carry out a commission from either one of the Presidents, a quorum of four committee members, a quorum of 10 members of Jewish Society, or anyone willing to part with 50p. I also write weekly Sedra Sonnets, and am currently composing a 12 canto biography of Barry Landy.
Director of Communications I facilitate the precise and accurate presentation, as well as the promotion, of the Presidents' policy to the members of CUJS, and liaise closely with the Press Secretary to deal with issues that may arise with the press or negative publicity. Halfway through the second season, the Chief of Staff and I will form the Committee to Re-Elect the Presidents. Waterboy I am charged with ensuring that there is an adequate supply of clean drinking water, in compliance with the European Drinking Water Directive (DWD), Council Directive 98/83/EC and all other relevant legislation, at all events either solely or jointly organised and/or run by CUJS. I report to the Welfare Officer on a fortnightly basis and to the Drinking Water Inspectorate at the beginning and end of each term. Community Cohesion Officer I attend all meetings of the Presidential Advisory Sub-Committee for Community Cohesion as an independent mediator, and regularly consult with the Presidents in an unofficial capacity. I try to prevent the eruption of all-out gang warfare between the various communities within CUJS, see that all voices, are given a fair and proportional hearing and work towards peaceful conflict resolution through open diplomacy without pre-conditions. Contact CU Cholent Society Ladlemaster & Ladle Mistress (Whisky Wench): Josh Marks & Donna Hirsch
The history of the Cambridge University Cholent Society is long and complex. Since the days of yore the distinguished members of the Society have gathered in friendship and in brotherhood to partake of the holy cholent. Since time immemorial these gatherings were presided over by a Ladle Master, a position which has been passed down from generation to generation, each Ladle Master personally appointing his successor. In the fulness of time the ladle passed to "Joe the meat filled". Following a revolution by certain female members of the Society, who held the cholent hostage, a new position was created - that of the Whisky Wench. This "prestigious" position was given to "Tanya the sloshed". Since then, the society has witnessed a number of transitions and thwarted plots. Fortunately, with our new leaders at the helm, stability reigns once more.
